San Miguel def Magnolia, 109-85 [PBA S48 Comm’s Cup Finals G2 | Feb. 4, 2024]

After suffering a lopsided loss in the Finals opener, Magnolia is expected to make some changes in the best-of-seven championship series against the surging San Miguel Beermen in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup today at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The game will start at 6:15 p.m. and the Hotshots are determined to tighten their defense in Game 2 to level the series at one game apiece.

Hotshots head coach Chito Victolero admitted they were overpowered by the Beermen in Game 1, 103-95. So they have to work harder in Game 2 in order to avoid going down a 0-2 hole.

“This is a series, this is not a do-or-die game, so all we need to do is make adjustments,” said Victolero. “We played very good defense in the second half and we’ll see what we can pick up from there ahead of Game 2.”

The Beermen’s offense was firing on all cylinders in the second quarter of Game 1, making 11 of 18 shots for 61.1 percent. They also knocked down six three-pointers to finish the quarter with 41 points and take a big lead going into halftime.

Still, the Hotshots performed well in other areas.

They had more assists, 26-21, more bench points, 53-27, and more points in the paint, 52-12.

But defense has always been the Hotshots’ weapon of choice and they know they can’t get into a shootout with the Beermen. At the start of the series, they allowed 16 more points than their usual average.
